Multicultural Perspectives in US Theatre

An exploration of contemporary narratives and performance as expressed in theatre, film, and television in the United States, organized around racial, ethnic, and cultural identities. Class lectures and assignments analyze the “diversity” of Black, Indigenous, AAPI, Latine/o/@/x, MENASA, LGBTQ, and disability narratives, putting them in historical and political contexts.

  • If I could look up progress or who cares about student, teaches well, and is kind and cares about her student, I would see a picture and Dr. Erin Kaplan’s name. She has helped me so much especially when times start to get crazy and chaotic. She is understanding and listens to when a student needs help. Overall, Dr. Kaplan is someone who I will recommend forever to anyone who wants to learn theatre from her. She introduces new types of theatre and plays and musicals I have never heard of before. The way she gets students to talk in class is not by forcing it and making it a mandatory thing, but is cautious and understanding when students don’t want to. Also she makes classes extremely easy and there really isn’t that much work if you just do the assignments on time and right. She is an easy A+ teacher if you just put in the work. This is how I see Dr. Kaplan. She is someone who cares.

  • Professor Kaplan is the best professor anyone could ask for. She pushes students to think about concepts they may have never thought of before and thoroughly teaches students histories with all the nuances and intersections that come with the contents of the course. She provides positive and descriptive feedback on students' work and gives constructive comments. Professor K is flexible and incredibly understanding of students' personal lives and shows that she truly cares. The course is excellently designed and provides a clear, structured outline of when things are to be done and turned in, and the Professor also makes sure to remind students in class as well. At times, it can feel like there is a lot of reading to be done and the course could possibly be improved through using more videos/clips of plays as opposed to reading them, however it is understandable considering the difficulty of finding clips that would be accessible to all students.

  • She loves what she teaches and is great at teaching it, would take her again for this course and any other classes she teaches.
